Betsy Hooker

North Carolina Cooperative Extension’s EFNEP program held its annual awards ceremony on Friday, November 2, 2023. EFNEP – Expanded Food and Nutrition Extension Program is tasked with educational programming for underserved and resource-challenged families in each county.

Henderson County’s own EFNEP Program Assistant Betsy Hooker took home three of the honors at the ceremony. They include the Over the Mark award which has several levels, Red, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Each level is increasing percentages above the PAs established goals. Betsy was the only Silver Award winner in the state and there was only one winner in the Gold and Platinum levels as well.

She also won the prestigious New Educator award (there is only one awarded in the entire state). This award is for the EFNEP PA with less than three years’ experience that has excelled in their program to the highest level. Betsy has been in her position for less than two years and consistently exceeds her goals. The New Educator award will be physically presented during the West District Extension Meeting on Dec 7 at the Kanuga Conference Center.

Finally, she and Ms. Amy McEntire have won the West District Golden Star award for the best partnership in EFNEP programming in the westernmost Extension district. Ms. McEntire is a 2nd and 3rd grade teacher at Hillandale Elementary School. As a physical education teacher she has worked with Betsy to promote healthy living among her students. She has arranged for Betsy to teach in several of her classes and has also helped recruit other classes in the school to take advantage of the educational opportunities that Betsy offers through her program.

“We are extremely proud of Betsy,” said Dr. W. Terry Kelley, N.C. Cooperative Extension, Henderson County Center Director. “She is doing a phenomenal job. Her program continues to grow and reach more youth and adults with nutrition education that will enhance their quality of life. She is a rock star.”

In response to the three awards, EFNEP Program Assistant Betsy Hooker said “ It is such an honor to teach the hundreds of youth and adult students who have participated in EFNEP programs over the last two years and to be a part of their great successes is an extra honor! These awards show just how much work each student has put into their health and well-being. The collaboration with Ms. McEntire at Hillandale Elementary School was a particular joy and I am thrilled that she has been recognized as the Golden Star that she is! I thank the Henderson County, N.C. Cooperative Extension Office, North Carolina State University, and the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program for their generosity in allowing me to serve in this position and for these awards. Now, let’s all eat smart and move more!”
