You can convert your bluebird boxes into roosting boxes by clearing the house of summer nesting material and installing a roosting ladder.
Did you know that birds will use your birdhouses in the winter to roost and stay warm? Migrating birds may stop by and use your nesting boxes on cold nights. Sometimes several species will huddle inside if it is really cold.
In the fall, clean out your birdhouses, removing nesting debris. Let the house stay open for a few days to let it air out. Add a roosting ladder. Much like the one in a chicken coop, the ladder adds spaces where birds can perch. Or, you can add a few diagonal sticks to act as perches.
Flipping the front of the bird house will put the entrance hole toward the bottom the house. This helps hold in heat better. Although not necessary, it can make a difference.
Building a roosting box is easy. Any small wooden, water-tight box with an entrance hole can work. Even hollow logs can be made into roosting boxes by closing in one end. Finally, brush piles, leaf accumulations in the branches of shrubs and even firewood stacks offer many sheltered places where birds can huddle on cold winter nights.
