Spider mites can be a difficult to control pest on houseplants.
What is that fine webbing that you are seeing on your favorite houseplant? Why are the leaves bronzing? The reason is spider mites.
Spider mites are tiny eight legged arachnid that sucks the juices out of the underside of plant leaves. If you look closely you will notice tiny, almost microscopic mites crawling around in the webbing.
If your plant is severely infested you might want to throw the plant away before it infests all your other plants. Mites are very difficult to control and can spread easily.
If you do choose to try to save the plant, remember that mites like heat and dryness. Start by quarantining the plant to a cooler area. Wash the plant leaves with a wet rag or a stream of water.
Other control options include treating plants with an insecticide. Choose those containing permethrin or pyrethrin. Insecticidal soap and horticultural oil can be effective. Remember always read the pesticide label carefully before using the product.
