Collapse ▲There are lots of fun things happening in the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Henderson County Center this time of year- here’s a short update on the youth livestock programming going on! Reach out to Abby with any questions.
- Livestock Judging
- 3 dedicated Henderson County youth have taken time to practice every week from the beginning of March and will continue until the end of July. They are training for a 3 part competition consisting of Quiz Bowl, Skillathon, and Livestock Judging. They are learning skills and knowledge about livestock production, but also in public speaking, critical thinking, decision making, and more! They have practiced weekly in the classroom and are now starting on farm visits. If you have any goats, sheep, steers, or heifers that you would be willing to host a practice for our kids to practice judging, please contact Abby. We’re so excited and proud of these youth and look forward to seeing them compete this summer!
- Beef Quality Assurance Certifications for FFA Students
- This past spring I was able to partner with the Ag teachers in Henderson County and offer BQA training at both East and West Henderson High Schools, and will go to North this fall. Over 55 students received their certification which includes a year long student membership to NC Cattlemen’s Association. This is a great training for students for baseline knowledge of beef cattle care- a strong certification to include on resumes!
- WNC Dairy Steer Program
- The 2023 Dairy Feeder Calf Program has 18 youth participants from 7 counties. The kids have had their calves for a month now and have completed the following:
- In depth orientation
- Program Application
- Half day Hands on Training and calf pick up
- 2 Zoom Check In’s
- 4 weight check in’s using their weight tapes.
- Bottle Feedings twice a day
- Daily care and chores

We are super proud of these kids and excited to see how much they learn this year! Their calves are growing well, follow along this summer as they raise and show them to see their success! Calves will be sold in lots after the Mountain State Fair, contact Abby at 828-255-5522 if you are interested in supporting this youth livestock project.
- WNC 4-H Pullet Project
- 11 Henderson County Youth are participating in the WNC 4-H Pullet Project this year! In 2022, Buncombe and Henderson County 4-H and Livestock agents teamed together with Poultry area agent Lauren Greene to offer a small scale pullet project for youth in both counties. It grew this year to reach other counties too. The youth attended 3 mandatory trainings to be well informed on how to raise their birds. We will host a showmanship clinic in July and our show will be in August. Youth will have the opportunity to continue on to show at the Mountain State Fair or in a statewide “Eggcellent Egg Contest”. This is a great opportunity for youth who may not be able to house a large animal livestock project.
