The BOOST (Bullington Onsite Occupational Student Training) program is one of the bedrocks of Bullington Garden’s history. BOOST is a program for sophomores in the Occupational Course of Study in all four Henderson County Public High Schools.

BOOST cultivates pre-vocational skills such as time management, respectful communication, process planning, and collaboration as students work on the trails, gardens and grounds.

The highlight of the year is a garden competition where students design, budget, grow plants and install a garden based on their chosen theme. Other than a small budget (~$50), the students can use any resources at the garden. The Best Garden (as judged by community leaders) is awarded at an end-of school year celebration, along with awards for Most Valuable Workers from each school.

Bullington Gardens held their BOOST Awards program on Wednesday May 31, 2023 and as usual it was as one person called it “a two-tissue event”. It is so uplifting to see the creativity and skills that these youth have and watch them put them to work. Being rewarded for their work is topping on the cake as their faces light up when they are recognized.

This year’s winner of the garden contest was North Henderson High School. However, in the BOOST program, everyone is a winner and every student benefits from the program.
