The annual Winter Apple School will be held on February 1, 2023. The meeting will be in person at Blue Ridge Community College from 8:10 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. Registration opens at 7:30 p.m. Two X pesticide credits will be available and some great new information that you don’t want to miss.
Winter Apple School has been a trusted source of information for commercial apple growers and others interested in apple production for many years. The program features a host of NC State Extension apple specialists and researchers from NC State University as the core of the program. Each of these speakers brings a unique discussion of apples from their various disciplines.
Breaks and lunch will be provided. The meeting will be held in its traditional venue at the Technology Education and Development Center at Blue Ridge Community College. After a huge crop in Henderson County in 2022, the 2023 season is already underway and Winter Apple School is an integral part of the preparation.
Several topics of interest will be included in the program including an update on the apple insurance program. Discussions on labor and farmworker housing will be on the program as they continue to be hot issues for all growers.
Our guest speakers will include Chris Justus from WYFF-TV discussing the impacts of weather and trends and outlooks. Chris is familiar to all in Henderson County and he will be a great addition to the program.
Additionally, Raul Godinez and his wife Mary, will be joining us virtually to discuss top working apple trees. Raul is well known in Henderson County for his grafting expertise. We look forward to having him on the program. Last year almost 175 people attended Winter Apple School. We hope to be back to our usual 200 in-person attendees for this year’s program.
An annual highlight of the meeting is the awards presentation during the BRAG Annual Meeting. The Apple Grower of the Year, Friend of the Apple Grower and Lifetime Achievement Awards are all distinguished honors announced at that time. This year a new award is being added to someone who works behind the scenes to make their business thrive. Who will be the inaugural “Behind the Scenes Award” winner.
The cost for attendance is only $40.00 for the entire program. This also entitles you to membership in the Blue Ridge Apple Growers Association for one year. What a bargain! Attendees who are there for the entire program will receive two hours of pesticide credit.
Registration forms and payment may be mailed to BRAG at P.O. Box 578, Edneyville, NC 28727 or dropped off at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Henderson County Center at 100 Jackson Park Drive, Hendersonville. Credit card payments can be accepted as well by contacting Ivy Olson at Ivy_Olson@ncsu.edu. Registration forms can be obtained by clicking on the link below and are also available at the office or we will be happy to send you one via email.
