The point where a limb joins the tree trunk is called the 'branch bark ridge'. This Wollen area that builds up at the junction between the branch and the trunk contains the wood that will grow over the wound created when the limb is pruned away. In this image you can see a year old pruning wound that is completely sealed over. It is critical to prune outside the branch bark ridge, leaving it intact so that the tree trunk can quickly seal the pruning cut.
