Collapse ▲The current Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that adults need at least 150-300 minutes of aerobic activity a week (think walking, dancing, biking) and at least 2 days a week of muscle-strengthening activity for optimal health benefits.
- For adults, physical activity helps prevent certain types of cancer, reduces the risk of dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease), all-cause mortality, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and depression; and improves bone health, physical function, and quality of life.
- For older adults, physical activity also lowers the risk of falls and injuries from falls.
- Physical activity can decrease pain for those with osteoarthritis, reduce disease progression for hypertension and type 2 diabetes, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, and improve cognition for those with dementia, multiple sclerosis, ADHD, and Parkinson’s disease.
We all could benefit from being more active but sometimes it can be daunting to get started, not to mention costly. Join us at the library this summer for free exercise classes.
These classes focus on strength training exercises that support increased strength, increased mobility and improve balance. These classes are great for people just getting started with an exercise routine or looking to exercise with others. Hand weights will be provided but feel free to bring your own if you would like.
The class involves a mix of sitting and standing exercises, but all exercises can be modified to be done fully seated for those with reduced mobility.
Classes are free and registration is required as seating is limited, please register online with the library. Register by following this link to the library’s calendar, find the class and date(s) you would like to register for and click on the class.
Please contact Abigail Pierce, abigail_pierce@ncsu.edu, with any questions regarding these classes.
