4-H Forestry Program and Competition
Did you know that around 18.6 million acres of North Carolina is forested? AND that North Carolina has some of the most biodiverse forests in the Nation?!
The 4-H Forestry Program and Contest educates youth on their forest surroundings, teaches about careers in forestry, and helps them appreciate conserving forestland as a source of products, benefits, and services necessary for quality living!
4-H foresters learn practical forest management skills through participation in the 4-H Forestry contest including
- Tree identification
- tree measurement
- Insect and disease identification
- And compass traverse.
The Young Naturalist 4-H Club has been practicing for this contest and their practice turned reward placing as the
1st Place Overall Jr. Team in the State!
1st Place Jr. Team from Young Naturalist 4-H Club, Henderson County
Isaac Wilkie , Zane Capps , Wyatt Merrell, Avery Powers
And!...
Zane Capps, 3rd place Jr overall individual
Avery Powers, 1st place Jr overall individual
I could hear the excitement from volunteer leader Ranae as she shared "Each one of these clubbers did an AWESOME job and all their hard work over the summer paid off. I am so proud of these 4 competitors! We have had a good summer being outside and visiting some different areas in Henderson County as we have learned how to identify trees, what diseases and bugs can affect trees, how to use a compass, and how to use a Biltmore Stick to figure out the board footage of lumber that is in a tree. If you are outside with them and want to know what kind of tree you are looking at...just ask one of them."
