F.R.E.S.H 4-H Program - 2025!

F.R.E.S.H. 4-H Program Returns for 2025 with Unique Partnership at Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site. 

The F.R.E.S.H. (Flat Rock’s Exceptional Sandburg Helpers) 4-H Program is now accepting applications for its 2025 summer season! This program is designed for youth ages 11–17. This year, F.R.E.S.H will be a five-week program offering hands-on learning in dairy goat care, public service, historic preservation, and a lot of fun!

Only seven participants will be selected, making the application process competitive, we will appreciate thoughtful responses to the questions. Youth selected will serve as volunteers at the historic site, assisting with goat care on the grounds of the Connemara farm (Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site) and engaging with park visitors.

The program kicks off with a mandatory orientation on Tuesday, July 1, which both youth and their parents must attend. Parent Orientation will be held from 9:00–10:30 a.m., followed immediately by the Participant Orientation, which will go until 1:00 p.m. Both sessions will take place at the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site.

Following orientation, participants will commit to one Tuesday morning shift per week, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., on the following dates:
  • July 8
  • July 15
  • July 22
  • July 29
  • August 5
The program will conclude with a celebratory Graduation Ceremony on Thursday, August 14, honoring the dedication and contributions of the youth volunteers.

F.R.E.S.H 4-H participants will gain practical experience in animal care and develop speaking skills with the public.
