(Updated: March 12, 2024, 8:02 a.m.)

Are you ready to dig into the world of gardening and cultivate your green thumb? Henderson County 4-H is offering a summer long Mini Gardening Program, open to youth ages 8-18. This program offers hands-on experience growing your own garden right in your backyard!

Summer 2024, 4-H Mini Gardening Program

Starting in May, participants will plant seeds and seedlings provided by 4-H and begin tending to their garden. Twice throughout the summer 4-H volunteers will visit participants' gardens to provide evaluation and encouragement! During the program participants will also maintain a garden journal, in which they will document their experience preparing, maintaining and harvesting their garden. Awards based on garden evaluations and journals will be given at our end-of-summer celebration. It's a great chance for participants to be recognized for their hard work and dedication!

The timeline for the program is as follows:
  • May 16th 6-7pm – Orientation: Participants will receive guidance on successful gardening practices, along with seeds and seedlings for their gardens.
  • End of May – Planting Seeds: Participants will plant the seeds provided by 4-H.
  • Beginning of June – Planting Seedlings: Participants will plant their seedlings provided by 4-H.
  • July – Evaluation Visits: 4-H volunteers and program leaders will visit gardens to assess progress and offer support.
  • August 16th 4-5pm – Final Evaluation and Awards: A culmination of the program, participants will receive feedback on their gardens and celebrate their achievements.

Participation in the program requires a registration fee of $10, payable by cash or check to NCCE. 4-H will provide participants with seeds, seedling plants, and a garden journal – everything needed to kickstart a successful gardening journey! Participants must have a 10×12 foot garden space* and attend the orientation on May 16th from 6-7 p.m. at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Henderson County Center.
