Pest Alert: Choanephora Rot on Squash

(Updated: June 22, 2021, 11:44 a.m.)

Are your squash turning fuzzy and rotting?

This squash disease is called choanephora rot.

This fungus is favored by warm humid weather (sound familiar?!) The key to preventing this disease is plenty of sun and airflow through the plants. I would avoid watering your squash if there is plenty of soil moisture.

If you lay a mulch of shredded leaves, dried grass clippings, or newspaper covered with straw under plants, then you can keep the fruit drier. Quickly remove infected fruits. Remove all plant residue at the end of the growing season.
