The Henderson County Demonstration Apple Variety Block

(Updated: Dec. 5, 2024, 5:39 a.m.)

The Henderson County Demonstration Apple Variety Block is an experimental orchard managed by the Cooperative Extension Master Pomologist volunteers. The purpose of the variety block is to identify and evaluate rootstocks, varieties, training systems, tree supports, irrigation needs, frost protection, densities, post-harvest quality, and other information relative to growing in our region. These evaluations allow local farmers to choose new cultivars and growing techniques.

The hours donated by the Master Pomologist volunteers create data that is shared with local farmers. The 100 plus varieties of apples provide an opportunity to see many new cultivars growing side by side under professional growing conditions. Over the years this planting has significantly benefitted the local apple industry and the farmers who work to provide fresh mountain apples.
