Tasty Treats to Welcome Spring!

With the sun shining so bright and warm, it is officially time to add refreshing drinks to your menu! One easy way to do that is by creating fruit smoothies.

This recipe is a great source of calcium and vitamins. Children need approximately 3 cups of dairy products each day and this is a fun, delicious way to help them reach that goal! It is also a healthful alternative to sugary beverages like soda and energy drinks. With this delicious springtime sip, your family will be thrilled to drink more nutritiously!

This recipe is also a great way to get the whole family involved:
  • Pick out fruit together, whether it's at the grocery store, a farmers market, or in a garden
  • Help younger children develop math skills by measuring out the ingredients
  • Help older children safely slice the fruit and operate the blender or food processor
  • Enjoy the smoothies together as a family

Fruit Smoothie (makes 2 cups)

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup of fruit (can be fresh, frozen, or canned in juice --try to avoid cans with heavy syrup, which adds unnecessary sugar)
  • 1 cup of low-fat yogurt or frozen yogurt
  • 1/2 cup of low-fat milk, 100% juice, or even ice cubes (ice cubes will make the smoothie thicker)

Directions:

  • Combine all in a blender (or food processor) and mix until smooth.
  • Pour into a glass and enjoy!
    • Note: You can add low-fat whipped cream and additional fruit to top the smoothie!
