Navigating the Holiday Season

For some, the holiday season can be full of joy, gratitude, connection, and love for family and friends.  For others, this time of year can bring up painful memories, grief, and loneliness.  It is hard not to get wrapped up in the busyness of the season as well, and navigating all the emotions and stress can be difficult.

As we go into our Holiday Sale here at Bullington Gardens, I am reminded to practice mindfulness.  Many of us keep lists in our head of errands we need to run, who we need to get presents for, lining up childcare or petsitters, and more.  Mindful moments can take us out of that feeling of overwhelm and bring us back into the present moment.  As you are going about the holiday season, here are a few ideas to help you stay present during a whirlwind holiday season:
  1.  Stop and savor a cup of hot chocolate, coffee or tea with a friend.  Even if just for 10 minutes, taking time to check in with each other and slow down the pace can be helpful.
  2. Take a short walk while focusing on what you see around you.  Perhaps you only have time to walk to the end of your driveway and back, but during that walk, stay present by observing the sights and sounds around you.  What colors do you see?  What do you hear?
  3. When you get in your car to go somewhere, take 3 deep breaths before starting your car.  This will help to clear your head and stay focused as you go from event to event or store to store.

May these mindful moments bring a sense of peace during this busy time of the year.  Happy holidays!
