Celebrate Food Waste Reduction Month!

Here are just a few easy ways to celebrate Food Waste Reduction Month this April by saving food AND money!
  • Use the FIFO method (First In, First Out), by organizing food by expiration date. By using this method, you ensure that you use the food items that will expire earliest, reducing waste due to expiration.
  • Try meal planning. It may sound daunting, but making a simple plan to use up all the food that you purchase for the week can help reduce food waste. For example, consider this 3-day plan, which wastes no chicken and uses the leftovers in a safe amount of time:
    • Monday: Serve roast chicken
    • Tuesday: Use leftover bones from roast chicken to make stock and the leftover meat to make chicken soup
    • Wednesday: Use chicken soup leftovers to make a casserole
  • If you have a lot of leftovers, you can freeze most foods to enjoy later (always follow safe food practices and time recommendations for individual ingredients).
  • If you have some foods that you know that your family can't eat, consider donating them to a local food pantry so that they don't go to waste (use MANNA FoodBank's Food Finder tool to find the nearest to you: www.mannafoodbank.org/food-finder/)
