One of the greatest duties I have each year is to attend the Bullington BOOST Graduation each May. The graduation and awards program celebrates the accomplishments of the students enrolled in the BOOST (Bullington Onsite Occupational Student Training) program at Bullington Gardens. The program is one of the many great events that occur at Bullington, but this one is extra special. BOOST is a program for sophomores in the Occupational Course of Study in all four Henderson County Public High Schools.
BOOST cultivates pre-vocational skills such as time management, respectful communication, process planning, and collaboration as students work on the trails, gardens and grounds.
The highlight of the year is a garden competition where students design, budget, grow plants and install a garden based on their chosen theme. Other than a small budget (~$50), the students can use any resources at the garden. The Best Garden (as judged by community leaders) is awarded at an end-of school year celebration, along with awards for Most Valuable Workers from each school.
Bullington Gardens held their BOOST Awards program on May 15, and as usual it was as one person called it "a two-tissue event". It is so uplifting to see the creativity and skills that these youth have and watch them put them to work. Being rewarded for their work is icing on the cake, as their faces light up when they are recognized.
After the awards program, the students are treated to lunch and games, including a classic tug-of-war contest. It's great fun for all and the Bullington staff and volunteers do a wonderful job putting it all together to properly celebrate the accomplishments of these youth.
Hats off to Isaac Wyatt, who is in his first year of leading the BOOST program. He has continued the history of excellence in this program that has been a cornerstone of Bullington for many years. Congratulations to all the BOOST students!!
