About 60% of the total forestland in North Carolina is owned by non-industrial private forest landowners. While the forest sector is an economic engine in most of the rural regions, timber production is not the primary reason for owning forestland for the majority of family forest landowners. Forests offer several alternative income opportunities for landowners, which are often compatible with their primary objectives of owning forestland, and some of them can be achieved without or with little additional efforts. This workshop educates natural resource professionals and landowners about forest-based alternative income streams available to their region.

Who should attend: professional foresters, resource professionals, Extension agents, and landowners

Trees are amazing organisms, living in most environments across the planet.  They are vital to our way of life, both for the useful products we derive from wood and as an integral factor in the quality of our lives.  Trees interact with each other and the environment in interesting ways. After the presentation, interested participants are invited to join Steve for a hike in the Preserve to learn hands on.
Steve Pettis has spent his life studying plants and gardening.  As a child, he gardened with his grandmother dividing daylilies, irises and daffodils and collecting native plants in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Georgia.  Steve has been a tree farm and nurs (View Full Event Description Here: conservingcarolina.org/event/speaker-series-secret-life-of-trees/)
