Administratively Disabled Unity Accounts
The Office of Information Technology has implemented a process that disables your unity account if it has been compromised. Typically this compromise occurs when your account credentials are shared in response to a phishing email. Phishing emails are email messages sent to you requesting your unity id and password. Remember that the Office of Information Technology and Extension Information Technology will never ask you for the id and password to your accounts. As a general rule, you should never give this information to anyone. If you have responded to a phishing email with your user id and password your should contact Extension IT immediately, even if your account has not been disabled. We can work with you and OIT to try and prevent any problems or any disruption in your access to your account. The following steps explain the process and what you must do to have your account reenabled after it has been administratively disabled.
Contact the Extension IT help desk if you suspect a problem with your account.
If you suspect that your account has been disabled or if you are having a problem with your unity account you should always contact the Extension IT help desk prior to contacting the OIT help desk. We will look at your account and verify whether it has been disabled or if there is another issue preventing your from accessing your account. If it has been disabled we will provide you with the OIT support ticket number that you will need when you send your request to reenable your account to OIT.
Contact the Office of Information Technology
Once Extension IT has verified that your account has been administratively disabled, you will need to provide the following information to OIT:
- Photocopy of your drivers license or your NC State Employee ID card
- Include the following information on the photocopy with your picture ID
- Your name and unity id – (This is the id that is composed of your name, not your password)
- The OIT support ticket number – (You will need to contact Extension IT to get this information)
- Your supervisor’s name, email address – (You will not have access to email and this information is used to send notification about your account)
- A contact number where you can be reached during business hours
- Fax this information with a cover sheet that includes the OIT support ticket number in the subject to: 919.513.0877
After OIT has received this information, you will receive a phone call to discuss the policy violation that caused your account to be disabled. They will then begin the process of restoring access to your account. This involves resetting the password and initiating the process to have your email account reenabled. If your email account has already switched over to Google Apps, OIT will send a request to Google to reenable your account. This process may take a few hours or a few days depending on what is involved.
Keep in mind that this process was put in place to help protect you. N.C. State currently receives about 10 new email phishing attacks per week. We all need to be diligent in how we protect all of our account information, not only N.C. State accounts.
