Guiding the Business Planning Process
So, how do I help someone draft a business plan for their farm?
As a "coach" or "assistant," you need to be familiar with both the basics of business planning and have resources available to help you provide examples and guidance.
This document contains a series of open-ended questions that will help to guide an advising session for an individual farm/farm family seeking your advice. The Coaching Guide has been developed to accompany a workbook entitled Building a Sustainable Business: A Guide to Developing Business Plans for Farms and Rural Businesses.
If you are teaching a group of farmers about business planning, check out the Example Scenario (MS Word or PDF) and the Example Scenario-Facilitator Version (MS Word or PDF).
These documents are intended to provide a scenario common throughout the western NC farming community. The group leader uses the Facilitator Version, which includes the scenario as well as a series of open-ended questions that are designed to accompany a workbook entitled Building a Sustainable Business: A Guide to Developing Business Plans for Farms and Rural Businesses. Participants receive the scenario and are asked to consider the scenario as their own and up-fit a business plan to the story.
