Tips for Enjoying Strawberries

Strawberries are in season now and there are so many ways you can use them. You can make jams, jellies, cakes, smoothies, pies and cobblers. Or you could just eat them whole or in slices.

If you visit a pick your own patch, look for bright red, shiny strawberries that are firm. Make sure you leave the caps attached, and avoid strawberries that are soft or mushy.

Fresh: Strawberries can be eaten fresh on cereal, in yogurt, or alone as a healthy snack. You can also add strawberries to salads to make a sweet, tangy addition.

Macerate: You can soften strawberries to make a sauce (macerate) for strawberry shortcakes, ice cream, or pancakes. To macerate strawberries, cut them to desired size, place in bowl, and mix in a little sugar. Let them sit on the counter for about two hours and you have a very nice syrup.
