2019 Fall Home Gardening Class Series

Are you a Mountain Transplant? Did you recently move to Hendersonville from some other part of the country? Then, learn to garden in western North Carolina by attending these classes offered by the N.C. Cooperative Extension of Henderson County.

Fall gardening classes begin August 15 at 6:30 p.m. with the Fall Veggie Gardening Class

HENDERSONVILLE: N.C. Cooperative Extension of Henderson County continues its 2019 home gardening class series designed specifically for “Mountain Transplants,” residents who have moved to the area and want to learn more about gardening in Western North Carolina.

The ‘Mountain Transplants’ Gardening Class Series, which continues this fall, is made up of five stand-alone classes taught by local experts. Class size is limited, and registration one week before the Series or individual class is required. All classes will be held at the Henderson County Extension Center, 100 Jackson Park Road.

Fall Vegetable Gardening August 15, 2019 – 6:30–8:30 p.m.
– Steve Pettis, Henderson County Commercial and Consumer Horticulture Agent, will teach attendees the basics of establishing a fall vegetable garden. Leafy greens, onions, garlic, and many other crops can be grown in WNC.

Mushroom Basics September 19, 2019 – 6:30–8:30 p.m.
– Steve Pettis, Henderson County Commercial and Consumer Horticulture Agent, will instruct. Students will learn basic fungal botany, how to grow mushrooms at home, and the top wild mushrooms to collect in the forest.

Native Plants of the WNC Mountains October 17, 2019 – 6:30–8:30 p.m.
– Steve Pettis, Henderson County Commercial and Consumer Horticulture Agent, will talk to students about all of the wonderful native plants that are available to gardeners. We will also discuss Exotic vs. Invasive vs. Noxious weeds.

The Secret Life of Trees November 14, 2019 – 6:30–8:30 p.m.
– Steve Pettis, Henderson County Commercial and Consumer Horticulture Agent will talk about our amazing trees! Henderson County is such a wonderful place to live because of the forests; but our forests are being cut down due to development. Trees that are planted into new landscapes are being planted improperly. Learn how we can protect our forests, plant trees for the future, and keep Henderson County green!

Planting For Birds, Bees, And Butterflies December 12, 2019 – 6:30–8:30 p.m.
– Steve Pettis, Henderson County Commercial and Consumer Horticulture Agent, will teach attendees which plants attract birds, bees, and butterflies.
