Dear Strawberry Community,

The craziness of last years weather has just continued into the new season 2018/19. Very warm temperatures over the last few weeks have started much unusual early growth, and many of you have seen first flowers already in January!!

This is too early! And sure enough, the first cold wave is expected to bring nights below freezing for the rest of the week.

Temperatures are not expected to drop below 20°F in most areas in North Carolina and Virginia (Figure 1-2). In a normal year that wouldn’t be a big concern. However, this year it might be recommended to put on row covers to protect newly built tender leaves and flower thrusts if the temperatures in your area are expected to be lower than 25°F.

Temperatures Friday morning, 6 a.m.

Fig 1-2: Minimum Temperatures for North Carolina and Virginia. Thursday (Fig 1, temperatures at 6 a.m.) and Friday (Fig 2, temperatures at 6 a.m.) night will be the coldest with temperatures close to 20°F in some areas of Virginia and the western Piedmont of NC.

A detailed 10-day forecast will follow as soon as we have solved some technical problems.

Stay warm and feel free to call or write an email anytime.
