The Annual Apple Recipe Contest will be held August 31 this year at the First Citizens’ Plaza on Main Street. Again this year we have prizes donated by generous local merchants.

Interested individual may enter the contest by submitting the Recipe Entry Form and written recipe to N.C. Cooperative Extension, Henderson County Center, by August 29. There are four categories in which recipes and finished products can be entered – Gluten Free, Breads, Pies and Pastries, and Desserts, and there is even a category for Kids.

The recipes must be original and not copyrighted. The type of apple used should be identified in the recipe, which should contain at least two cups of apples or one cup of applesauce.

Contestants bring their completed product to the First Citizens’ Plaza on Friday, August 31 between 8:30 and 10 a.m. Judging begins at 10:30 a.m. Judges this year will include some familiar Western North Carolina and Henderson County faces.

First and Second Place winners will be announced in each of the categories, with a Grand Prize going to the best entry overall, around noon, after judging is complete.

For an entry form and a complete list of the rules and regulations, come by the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Henderson County Center, in Jackson Park or on our website at For questions, contact Renay Knapp, Extension Agent, Family and Consumer Sciences or Ivy Olson, Administrative Assistant at 828/697-4891.
