I just heard from Dr. Mark Hoffmann earlier this morning, and he said, “Weather forecast did change and it’ll be in lower 30s, upper 20s in some regions Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Temperatures on the ground even lower. I’ll put out an advisory this afternoon.”
Right now Mark is visiting a grower, and so I wish to simply point out in this brief advisory that he is right, temperatures are going to be colder on both tomorrow morning (Wed) and Thursday morning.
Wednesday morning – current minimum temperature map:

Previously, this is what AWIS was forecasting for tomorrow morning (Fig.2)

Thursday morning colder as well:
Figure 3 has the current minimum temperature map from AWIS for North Carolina for Thursday morning, and you will note that in the center of the state (near GSO), the color is now PINK – meaning minimum temperatures will be in the 30-32 range. Before, it was going to be in the 32-34 range just below Greensboro (see Fig. 2).

Also, here are the 10-Day Detailed hourly forecasts – these may be very useful to growers who are using sprinkler irrigation during this frost cylce — these detailed forecasts tell you the wet bulb temperature for safe “turn on” and “turn off” of sprinklers (rule is to start running at 33 Wet Bulb). I am aware that some growers may be removing covers today to allow better wind movement through the crop — plants in bloom under covers for extended periods (5 days+) will make some very rough looking berries due to poor pollination and fruit set CAUSED BY COVERS. As one grower said this morning, “it almost defeats the purpose of the covers if you need to discount berries because of rough shape.” Its’ at this time of year that using sprinklers for frost protection has a real advantage from standpoint of making sure that blooms are getting decent pollination conditions during the day — under the covers they do not!
