ANNUAL FORUM

December 7, 2001

The Annual Forum of the North Carolina Federation of Cooperative Extension Associations was held on Friday, December 7, 2001 at the Lee County Extension Center in Sanford. The forum as called to order by President, Dr. Steve Lilley, who welcomed all present.

Denise Brown, President-Elect, introduced the group with a Getting To Know You….icebreaker.

Each association president or representative was asked to give a brief report of activities:

NCACAA – Johnny Hensley

The 2001 year has been a good one for the NC Association of County Agricultural Agents. Current state-wide membership is approximately 256 members and more than 300 life members. A few agents elected to retire during 2001 with the offered Discontinued Service Retirement.
The West District hosted the Annual State Meeting and Professional Improvement Conference June 26-28, 2001 at the Holiday Inn SunSpree in Asheville, NC. More than 200 agents, spouses, children and retired members were in attendance. Early bird activities included several commodity tours (Aquaculture, commercial vegetables, dairy and horticulture). NC Commissioner of Agriculture, Meg Scott Phipps delivered the keynote address at the opening lunch. Other tours followed in the afternoon (4-H projects, buffalo farm and feeding facilities; Queen Farm Feed Lots and Mountain Research Station, Western NC Arboretum and paper mil l-chipper operations). There were planned activities for spouses and youth throughout the meeting. Professional Improvement sessions and the business of the association were conducted prior to the Annual Awards Banquet on Thursday evening.

A host of agents, retired agents, and spouses from North Carolina attended the National meeting of NACAA in Albuquerque, New Mexico August 5-9. North Carolina was successful in the re-election of George Stancil as Treasurer of the National Association. North Carolina member, Fred Miller is also serving as Southern Region Director. We also picked up a few more leadership positions nationally as committee chairs and regional chairs or vice-chairs of committees.

The 2002 State Meeting and PIC will be hosted by the North Central District and will be held in Rocky Mount, NC June 25-27, 2002. The 2002 National Meeting will be held in Savannah, Ga., July 28-Aug. 1, 2002. The 2003 National Meeting is scheduled for July 13-17 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. In 2004, we will be meeting in Orlando, Florida July 11-15.

North Carolina agents are positioning our state association to bid for the National meeting to be held in North Carolina. We are currently planning to place a bid to host the 2008 meeting during the 2004 meeting in Orlando, Fl. We are also considering a campaign to elect a Vice-President from North Carolina in the near future.

NCEAFCS – Denise Baker

There are 171 state members in the association. The 2001 NCEAFCS State Conference, ‘Putting The Pieces Together In The Mountains,’ was held in Asheville in August.
