Swannanoa 4-H Camp

Camp is available for ages 8 - 16, June 21 - 26, June 28 - July 3, July 5 - 10, and July 12 - 17. Prices range from $395 - $420.

Children with parents in the military can qualify for free weeks at camp July 12 - 17 (ages 5 - 8) and August 2 - 7 (ages 8 - 16)

Fur Fish 'n Game Rendezvous

June 21 - 26

Millstone 4-H Center, Ellerbe, NC

The Rendezvous is an opportunity for youth to earn their hunter safety certification, study natural resources, create an ourdoor ethic, and learn outdoor recreation skills. The week-long residential camp is for boys and girls ages 12-15, and held at Millstone 4-H Center, in the beautiful sandhills gamelands. Campers learn firearm safety and shooting skills from hunter education officers. Other activities include: falconry, bird dogs, trapping, wildlife identification, taxidermy, first aid, canoeing, fishing, a low-ropes course, swimming, and much more! Those that have already attended the beginning Rendezvous, or already have their hunter safety certification, can apply for the the Adavanced Rendezvous. During the Adavanced track, campers will learn more about being a wildlife and fisheries biologist. Advanced activites include trapping, wildlife surveys, wildgame cooking, and fish surveys. From I-40, take the Bat Cave Exit on to 74A East. Go under the Parkway. In about 3 miles you will see the Reynolds Fire Dept. on the right. At the next light take a right on Rocket Drive. (You can't miss it. Look for the big Rocket, but if you get to Ingles you passed it.) The middle school is on the right. The high school is on the left.

Clothing Re-Creations

Join us for a fun filled creative course as we guide you to redesign worn clothes into innovative new fashions. Basic sewing knowledge is required but more importantly bring your creative spirit, old clothes, knits and enthusiasm. We'll start with a bag of old clothes and end with a fashion show!

“West District 4-H Gem Mining”

Franklin, NC

Tuesday, August 18, 10:00 AM

You are invited to visit Macon County for gemming and to learn more about the area.  Pre-register by calling the North Carolina Cooperative Extension office(828/697-4891) or email Cindy_Williams@ncsu.edu by August 10, so the office can relay that information to Macon County. You can either start at the museums or the mine...your choice!  Let Macon County know which one you choose to do first.  Normally, the later it gets in the day, the busier the mine will be.  If you visit the mine first, not to worry, as the museums, shops, etc. are accustomed to seeing mining dirt on visitors. 

Mason Mountain Mine: ($5.00 per person) - includes 2 buckets of native dirt which includes some salted.  You can bring a check (or cash) to cover your group when you arrive at the mine, payable to the mine.  Be sure to bring protection from the elements...hat, sunscreen, bug repellant, water, etc.  They also have a gift shop you will want to visit.

 There are two ways to get to the mine..

1) Coming from Sylva (US 441/23)?  Look for Burglen's Natural Gem Store and turn right onto Sanderstown Road, and head north (turn right) on Hwy. 28 to the mine.

2) From Franklin going to the mine?  Go north 5.5 miles on HWY 28 (just off E. Main St.).  It is right along the road, so look for signs.

 Downtown Franklin: (Museums request no more than 20 at a time)

Gem Museum...located in the center of Franklin, across from the Court House.  This museum has the history of mining in Macon County, and all kinds of gems.   They have great hands-on exhibits. This museum is open from noon to 5:00 PM.  It's FREE!!

Historical Museum...downtown Franklin.  FREE admission!!  See artifacts and antiques and learn all about the history of mountain life.  Open 10 AM – 5 PM

Scottish Tartan Museum... charges $1 admission for ages 12 and under, those under 6 are FREE, and $2 for those over 12.  Learn about the Scots that reside in the mountains. 

Lunch?...Take a walk along the Greenway and enjoy your picnic lunch at one of the shelters.  The mine is another possibility for a picnic, as they have tables available.

Ice Cream Anyone?...We have Peppermint Patty’s Ice Cream Shop on the corner of Palmer and Porter.  Sprinkles is near Wal-Mart, adjacent to Willy's  Ribs & BBQ.  Dairy Queen is south on HWY 441 (Georgia Road) just south of McDonald's.

ACE Master Volunteer Training

August 21 - 23

The North Carolina 4-H Master Volunteer Achievement in Continuing Education (ACE) program is designed to assist 4-H volunteers in the development of specialized skills by participating in quality training experiences, processing learning experiences, conducting service activities/projects, and developing a Master Volunteer ACE portfolio.

Program objectives include:

1) Improve volunteer feelings of self confidence and influence in the organization;

2) Increase the quality of program delivery for 4-H members in North Carolina;

3) Build a base of committed volunteers to increase program capacity; and

4) Develop an infrastructure to expand exponentially the reach of 4-H youth development in North Carolina.

 Recycle

4H LIT club is recycling as our fundraiser. We are collecting faucets. If you, neighbor, friend, or coworker are switching out a faucet, we will take the old one off your hands and keep it out of the landfill! I will also take copper pipes, alum. gutters/windows.
